Everyone loves monsoons. Children especially! Babies playing with bright and colorful umbrellas and donned in cute cartoon character raincoats are a delight to watch. It reminds me of my childhood. We used to gather below our building and get completely drenched in the rain, only to get an earful from our mommies ☺
Years have passed but, the rains bring about the same level of excitement. Now, Riaan tells me to accompany him to jump in the muddy puddles (courtesy Peppa Pig) and you know what? I happily oblige most of the time. Depriving your children from such experiences is absolutely unfair to them. It is true that monsoons are accompanied with a host of infections and illnesses and I too become a paranoid mommy now and then but, we can take necessary precautions to avoid the same instead of dampening your child’s spirits. I am sharing the regime that we follow regularly at home. These are very simple tips but, extremely helpful to beat those blues.
Sanitizing – The first and the most important and sometimes, one of the major reasons for children to fall sick (if dealt with carelessly). We make it a point to wash his hands and feet with a hand wash or a soap whenever he gets home from outside. I do not really have to worry about this as Riaan is a water baby and most of the time I’m yelling at him to come out of the bathroom ☺
Boiled water – Unclean water is normally a breeding ground for a variety of bacteria and germs. I’m sure you are thinking that I have lost my mind because gone are the days when people used to drink tap water. Nowadays, every household has a swanky water purifier (thanks to Hema Malini ☺). But, please do check with the guy who services your water purifier and you will be amazed to know that even the biggest companies do not guarantee a hundred percent pure drinking water. Boiling water is an age old practice which is foolproof as it eradicates the bacteria instantly. At home, especially during monsoons we make it a point to give Riaan boiled water only.
Immunity Supplements – For this, I will not make any recommendations as your child’s pediatrician is the best person to consult but yes; regular intake of Vitamins and minerals has surely helped in building up my bub’s immunity.
Mosquito mania – These small beings are probably the most feared during the monsoons as they have in the recent years managed to create an atmosphere of terror amongst the masses ☺. Do not under any circumstance allow your kid to step out of the house without applying a repellant. Its available in the market in many forms like creams, bands and the latest one is a roll on (which by the way is very effective).
Turmeric Milk – This one is the hero of our household. For children under the age of 2, please consult the doctor before you give it to your child. This is nothing but, a very simple concoction made of turmeric powder (or fresh turmeric if you have), ginger, cloves and milk. Boil everything together thoroughly and then add sugar or honey (as per choice) and drink it hot. Turmeric is an antiseptic in its own and has huge medicinal properties. One cup of this magic potion before bedtime and your bub should be fit as a fiddle. (It took a lot of convincing to get Riaan to drink it though. So, now we have named it “yellow milk” ☺)
Mommies, the bottom line is to keep your children infection free but not stripping them off their fun. Needless to say, how much ever you try to keep them protected they are children ultimately and they will fall sick. Just take it as a phase and let them have their own jolly good time ☺
